Good People,
Rachael, Buster and I have moved back to Brooklyn, NY. Our seven years in New Orleans have been a wonderful mix of old and new friends, great music, parades and food. We will miss New Orleans greatly. We plan to visit and perform regularly. (like July 28 at Tipitina's!) We are excited to be back in NYC and reconnect with some old friends and colleagues. Buster and I have been here about a week. He is a bit confused about the lack of grass and I have already scored two parking tickets (one is not my fault). Back to unpacking!

Well its been a while since I posted some news...  I've been studying composition with Yotam Haber at the University of New Orleans for a few years now.   He has written a piece called New Water Music that will be performed Saturday April 8, 2017 at the Seabrook Boat Launch on Lake.   the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra is involved and so is New Orleans Airlift and so are some shrimp boats and barges. It should be interesting.  I'll be joining them on Viola (which is a new for me!).  More Information here:

Hi All, As some of you know I've been studying music at the University of New Orleans for the last several years. I'm getting close to a masters degree in jazz studies and will be performing a recital this Tuesday.  I'm excited! Funny I've never done a recital. Not as a kid ever.  So I'm calling it a concert. Anyway I would love to see you if you are free.   It is a free show at the recital hall in the UNO performing arts center.

Here is the facebook event!

Pianist and UNO graduate student, Bill Malchow, performs with a trio on Tuesday, November 17, 7pm at the Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. Bill will be showcasing original compositions and arrangements written while studying at UNO.   Joining him will be Joel Zobrist on drums and Nathan Lambertson on bass.  http://www.billmalchow.com

I'm sitting on the beach in Bell Harbor, NY, there is a construction going on of a new storm wall, but otherwise it looks normal, people enjoying the beach. Trees have had trouble recovering from Sandy let's hope they pull through.

I'm playing in Beacon, NY and NY, NY thursday and friday. Check the show page for details.

New Orleans pianist Tom Worrell put together a great lineup of musicians to honor James Booker's birthday. This year it was hosted at the Maple Leaf Bar. A fun night indeed. It was an honor to get to play Booker tunes alongside David Torkanowsky, Josh Paxton, Tom McDermott, Ronald Markham, Johnny Vidacovich, Jack Cruz, Tom Worrell, Joe Krown, and Jon Cleary (great surprise guest). I also accompanied Topsy Chapman whose "Please Send Me Someone to Love" gave me the chills.

Great night Tom W! If you get a chance - check out Lilly Kerber's kickstarter site where she is raising money to finish her Booker documentary.

Why New Year's Eve should be today http://www.billmalchow.com20120229#321
Posted: Wed, Feb 29, 2012 11:09am
Category: News

I've always wondered why February had the fewest number of days.  I guess they ran out of days: 30,31,30,31, . . . 28 oh shoot, ran out. But it seems to me, when you run out of something, you do so at the end.  If I had 11 oranges and I said divide it into 4 even groups (without cutting) I would gander that most folks would break it up into 3, 3, 3, 2.  Right?   So with that logic, the last month of the year, December, should have 28 days instead of February.

We can renumber December. OR! We can reinterpret the numbering of the months. Linguistically speaking, the root of October is Oct. or 8. (octogon, octave). The root of November derives from 9. The root of December, Deci, is 10.  When we change it all January becomes the 11th month, and February becomes 12. Now that makes sense.

Let's call March 1 "Malchow's New Year".

There are additional benefits: We can give Christmas some space. New years is now associated with the coming of spring. (much more fitting I think)  Some years there would be no Mardis Gras, and some years there would be two. That spices things up.

Who is with me?

Speaking of Bees. I went to the New Orleans Hornet's game last night. They lost. I drank too much. They sell Abita, and Shrimp Po Boys in the stadium. They call the arena "The Hive". But there is no Honey. Don't hornets live in a nest?

Here are 4 things I'm looking forward to after the move.

1) Right turn on Red.
2) Dazzling natives with my parallel parking skills.
3) On those online address forms,  I will be able to select my state with a single keystroke.  "L". Right now I have to hit "N" 7 times.
4) Louisiana Left -  It seems in New Orleans you can not make a left turn on major intersections.  You have to drive past the road, then make a u-turn in the neutral zone, then make a right hand turn (see no 1).
OR
You can make a right turn immediately, then make a u-turn in that road’s neutral zone.

Seems like a pain eh?

Perhaps I will grow to hate this, but for now, I kinda like it. It seems quicker to me.  Maybe it’s not and I just like being in constant motion.  Maybe I like being reminded that to move forward, at some point I must go in the opposite direction.  Maybe I like it 'cause I thought I invented the term “Louisiana Left”. I’ve since been corrected.

Tonight at Rodeo, Moving to New Orleans... http://www.billmalchow.com20100520#281

It’s a bit late to promote a gig for tonight. but most of you have blackberry’s and smart phones these days. (Me, I’m happy with my 5 year old samsung. It’s got T9!). So perhaps I can persuade you to change barstools.

‘Why so late? well things rang late, I’ve spent the day gathering boxes from friends and the Coke Bottling Plant in Maspeth (sorry Pepsi Folks, you’ll get your turn). Why? Cause my girl and I are moving. Moving to New Orleans.

I’ve had many a fan (and musician) say they thought I was from New Orleans, and I figure that is the highest compliment I could get. But no, I’m not from there. I’ve visited a lot but I’ve never lived there more then a month at a time. I just fell in love with the music.

So I’ve finally succumbed to her gravity. I’m really thankful that my girl Rachael, who is doing quite well here, is joining me on this journey.

So yes, I’m excited. but also sad. As far as cool towns go, NYC is hard to beat. Luckily, we have JetBlue for future reunions.

I’m at Rodeo Bar tonight, thursday May 20. Joining me tonight is Jon Ellis, Dave Phelps, Louie Appel and Matt Lindsey

We move in mid June.

Last night I’m sitting at the Ear Inn Bar chatting with Victor the bartender. No gig just hanging.   He tells me the night before Bono and the Edge stopped in.   The waitress that served them (Jessica/Jennifer) "was the only one who got a hug". She says they are both very short.    They were working out rhythms and songs, just drinking Guinness until one table started bugging them and they left. One guy next to me wanted to know what they smelled like, weirdo.  I just wanted to know how much they tipped.    The check was $25 and they gave Jessica a $50.  So I plan on tipping $26 before I leave.

I wonder if when they came in, and they asked for a table, did they get the old "will you be eating dinner, treatment?".

Then I chatted with one of the regulars, Tom. Tom is the stage manager of the metropolitan opera. Can you believe, their annual budget is 300 mil?  He says ticket sales are down and this is a problem.  I bet.  I'm trying to get free tickets from him.

I find out Tom was a pilot for the Navy during the vietnam war, ferrying generals and VIP's around between Vietnam and Hawaii.  So I gave him shit for that cushy job he gave me shit for not having to do anything. Touchee.  Still I couldn't help but think while my Dad was flying huey's for the Army, getting shot at, Tom was in hawaii with the Navy.  No wonder the Army / Navy game is such a big deal.

I’ll be back at the Ear Inn this Monday to play. Skip Ward (bass) and Louie Appel (drums).   We are starting at 10pm instead of midnight so you can all come by and sing a Christmas song or two.

Tonight Thursday, I’m at Rodeo with the Jack Grace Band. He’s got the full band out tonight. (Trombone/Trumpet too). So it ought to be a good one.  I have a feeling we will be singing about drinking.

Also Alex McMurray will be in town January 15.  We are headlining Sullivan Hall.   So please mark it down.   We are going to release his Cd “How to be A Cannonball” to the wild. Yes a CD release party.  The Go Cup All Stars and I will be backing him up and doing some of our stuff too.

- Bill

Roots pianist and vocalist Bill Malchow divides his time between the Big Apple and the Big Easy—which sounds about right, since his percolating, second-line style bubbles and boils with Fats Waller-style Harlem stride and the steaming New Orleans sounds of Dr. John, James Booker, Allen Toussaint, and Professor Longhair.

Beatles gigs http://www.billmalchow.com20090612#255

So I am sitting here, transcribing french horn parts from Paul McCartney's Little Lamb/Dragonfly.

From time to time I play with two Beatles tribute bands.  One is "Bubble Does Beatles", they play mostly to kids and their families, the other is Larrry Russell's Beatlestock who play to adults and try to do more of a sing along thing.   Mostly my role is to play piano, organ and write out parts for strings and horns. Usually we can't afford the horns/strings so I play all those trumpet, violins etc on the keyboard. Occasionally I sing a lead.

I took the gigs cause I always liked the Beatles and figure why not learn all those cool little things that George Martin did.    But every gig turns into mountains of work. Late nights transcribing the tunes, writing charts out, and trying to program my keyboard to sound like backward saxophones through guitar amps.
Too much work.  Typically a week before the gig I swear I'll never do another one

Then the show comes and you think, wow that was lots of fun, the crowd loved us, I learned some great tunes.  Some time passes and I think oh that wasn't so bad, sure I'll do "Abbey Road" etc.     So here comes another one.

Larry Russel (leader of Beatlestock) says "hey, B.B. King's wants us to do a Paul McCartney birthday show"  I think, Hmm... I've done enough shows that I have charts for nearly every beatles song, this show will be easy. B.B. Kings is nice too. "Ok Larry I'm in".

Setlists suggestions go back and forth and next thing you know we are doing lots of Paul McCartney solo and Wings tunes.  Dang.  More tunes I've never heard, more charts, more questions like "how can I play that french horn part while I play those flutes"... grrr.  I'm never doing another show again.

I must say though, Paul, if your reading this, nice job! There is some pretty cool stuff here. Mrs. Vanderbilt (hey heyo), Backseat of my Car, Venus and Mars and others (I won't give it all away).   Also, did you know that Badfinger tune "Come and Get It" was written by Paul?  Now we both do.

Larry Russel's Beatles Stock - Thursday June 18. @ B.B. Kings.

Today is May 5. Cinco de mayo. The band and I will be at rodeo bar. There will be no French songs today. There will be no Mexican songs either (I don't know any). There is a Herb Albert song called "Cinco de Mayo" I'm tempted to cover but you'll have to see how my day goes. Either way there will be a mariachi band on before us.

Hmm, maybe we could simulate the Battle of Puebla by playing a french song and then having the mariachi band drown us out. Eh, I shouldn't think out loud here.

Today is Fat Tuesday! Happy Mardis Gras! The band and I will perform the classic 1972 album "Dr John's Gumbo" tonight at Sullivan Hall.

My lineup is all set and it has grown a bit. This won't be duplicated for a while (if ever) so please come down and enjoy! We start at 10pm. Funky Fritters are at 8pm.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009, 10pm
Performing Dr John's Gumbo
Bill Malchow and the Go Cup All Stars
Sullivan Hall
214 Sullivan Street
New York, NY

with Bill Malchow - piano/vocals
Brian Seeger - guitar
Casandra Faulconer - bass
Dave Berger - drums
Scott Bourgeois - tenor sax/clarinet
Chuck MacKinnon - trumpet
Elizabeth! ! - trombone/vocals
David Luther - tenor sax/bari sax
Chrissi Poland - vocals
Kierstin Grey - vocals
Matthias Bublath - organ

11 people. Coool right?

About the album:
Dr. John's Gumbo bridged the gap between post-hippie rock and early rock & roll, blues, and R&B, offering a selection of classic New Orleans R&B, including "Tipitina" and "Junko Partner," updated with a gritty, funky beat. There aren't as many psychedelic flourishes as there were on his first two albums, but the ones that are present enhance his sweeping vision of American roots music. And that sly fusion of styles makes Dr. John's Gumbo one of Dr. John's finest albums. (allmusic.com)

Dr. John's Gumbo was ranked number 402 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

We will be performing the record in it's entirety at 10pm.
The Funky Fritters at 8pm

Just did some nice overdubbing with Jack Grace yesterday. The new Album is called "drinking songs for lovers". So far it sounds damn good. They are mixing as I type this. Too bad I'm not there to convince them to turn the organ and piano's louder.

I'll be down in New Orleans a bit the end of Nov/Dec. I'm excited to be backing up Shannon McNally and the Lower 911 (Dr John's band).
Alex McMurray, Simon Lott, Tommy Sciple and I will be hitting the D.B.A. on Nov 30.

New Orleans is warmer then NYC right now. That is good.

Regarding Beer at Barbes. At first I was digging the "speckled-hen"
drafts. The problem is I start thinking what a speckled hen really
might look like, and then somehow that get's me thinking of the
chicken pox. Not good. So that's out for now. I've been trying the
Blue Moon, since there isn't much of summer left and you get a lemon
in that beer. But it's now starting to smell like fall outside. (Weird
for august eh?) So there will have to be a new choice tonight.

Hello,

I'll be continuing the Friday night august residency at Barbes tonight.  There was some back and forthness on my availability tonight, so I may have said last week I wasn't go to be there.  But rest assured I will be.

I start at midnight and go to about 2am.

The shows have been fun. The first week I discussed my trip to the new Ikea.  Last week I wasn't so chatty.

Perhaps I'll talk about the ice age tonight.  The ice ages seem to have been triggered by variations in the Earth's orbit.  Did you know that the guy that discovered this and proved that this was a possibility (mathamaticly speaking) was a janitor?   Goggle: "James Croll".

hmm. maybe I won't talk about that...

So I met Dr John Tuesday night.  He is my major influence on piano so when I heard he was playing at the Highline ballroom I used all my connections to get backstage. and it worked (thanks Shannon, Chris, and Steve).  So we talked about 15 minutes. We talked about James Booker, the old days, hustling pin ball, ny winters (too cold), and how he can't play so fast anymore due to "the corporation tunnel and all that". But mostly I just stared and kept thinking. Wow, he's talking to me.  See attached pic.

It's been a good week. I had a nice couple of gigs with Shannon McNally last weekend.  We did a bunch of Bobby Charles tunes and she really impressed me... especially being 7 months pregnant!

Today I'll be driving to JFK to pick up Earl Poole Ball (Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, Buck Owens, Byrds) for an upstate gig with the Jack Grace Band.  Earl was Johnny Cash's piano player for 20 years so I expect to hear some stories.   Maybe some I can share...

This Friday Bill Malchow and the Go Cup All Stars will be on the main stage at B.B. Kings opening for the Funky Meters. Maybe I can steal some licks from Art Neville.  Hope to see you there.

So I set out last week on a trip to New Orleans. Jazzfest is coming, you know. I decided to drive down since I'll be here a while and wanted to bring my gear.

Highlights so far include:
  • Crabs and beer for lunch in Baltimore, MD.
  • A nice hour long nap at Maryland's finest highway rest stop approx 12 miles after the crabs.
  • Grits at the waffle house in Newton, North Carolina.
  • South Carolina - Cowpens National Battlefield. (thanks to Gretchen the lady in my GPS who pointed out I was near).
  • Watching the "yacht rock review" in Atlanta, GA.
  • My first ever Rodeo near Meridian, MS.
  • My first time shooting a gun with some locals in Meridian, MS.
  • 4/20 8pm. Arrival in New Orleans. 90 minutes later I'm at Donna's. Eating catfish and watching a barefoot Joe Ashlar tear up his shiny new Hammond organ...

This morning I'm reading the "Park Slope Courier". I'm told after a 16 year absence there is a new Miss Brooklyn 2008. Hurray! But she is from Manhattan. Wha? Apparently she just moved to New York from somewhere else. Is this considered carpet bagging?

I'm not a pageant fan but somehow this ticked me off. As I read on I find there weren't enough Brooklyn girls to compete so they had to open it up to the other boroughs. Inside it shows a few of the ladies parading in swim suits and high heels. Hmm, perhaps the Brooklyn girls are too smart for this.

Opening for Buckwheat Zydeco http://www.billmalchow.com20080217#200

Last night I opened for Buckwheat Zydeco at B.B. Kings Blues Club here in New York. Opening gigs can be fun, but also a little stressful, as everyone is just staring at you waiting for the main act wondering who you are. But, the people tonight were really receptive and made us feel welcome. Dancing, singing along, and they bought some Cd?s, what more could you ask for?

Buckwheat played great. We all know about the accordion but he's also an awesome organ player which I didn't know. I also learned he hated Zydeco as a kid. One day Clifton Chenier (father of Zydeco) had him play organ with him and Buckwheat got hooked.

Buckwheat was a little sick, bronchitis I was told. So I couldn't really smooze with him. But I did like hanging with the band. Little Buck, Olivia, and all the rest of the entourage so nice to meet you...

I've also gotten to know Charlie and Glinda at the world famous Donna's bar and grill. Nice people, Charlie, "the dawg", has those great stories! I've played two shows at Donna's. Simon Lott joined me last night and it turned into a fun one... Looks like I'll be back for Mardis Gras.
